If there is no date here, get in touch and we will put you on our waiting list. Do tell us how urgently you need the VHF licence.
WE DO NOT TEACH YOU WITH ANY COMPUTER SIMULATION.

You will be "hands-on" with real training radios.

The SRC course covers DSC & GMDSS procedures.

  • SRC means Short Range Certificate.
  • DSC means Digital Selective Calling.
  • DSC is used on up-to-date Marine VHF Radios.
  • GMDSS is the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
We operate a short waiting list during parts of the year when the demand for SRC courses is not great. We can usually fix one for you if you urgently need a licence. If we arrange a course just for you - we will quote you. If no date is shown above, the waiting list applies. In either event - do E-mail or phone us to say you want to do the “Classroom course”.

ICOM VHF Radio The “Short Range Certificate” is only issued in the UK by the RYA for leisure sailors.

The course and exam covers topics other than VHF radio, which are associated with GMDSS. You need to understand these other topics and know a little about them, even if you do not intend to go to Sea. The course is suitable for Motor or Sailing Yacht crew, Fishermen, Inland Waterway users, Dive Safety Boat personnel and users of Personal Water Craft.

When we have received your booking form and payment, we will post the course book to you. RYA say that you cannot attend such a course unless you have the book - and have done some study, before attending.

You could start to learn the Phonetic Alphabet, Numerals and the MAYDAY voice procedure now! Try our Phonetic page.

The course duration is about 7 hours with at least three hours home study in advance and does not include the exam/assessment time.

We normally expect to have between four and six persons attend.

We will advise you exactly where your course will be held and we will provide a webpage with a map and directions. Your course will start at 0900 local time. We hope you arrive in good time, but we might be busy when you arrive, setting up the equipment. We hope you will understand that we probably will have only had access to the room 30 minutes before the time your course is due to start.

During the day we will provide you with Tea, Coffee and biscuits. We should have ordinary Tea, De-Caff Tea and both ordinary Coffee and De-Caff Coffee. We will have ordinary semi-skimmed cow's milk and sugar available. If you need something a little different, you need to tell us in advance.

You must bring your own lunch. We will probably take a 30 minute recess at lunchtime. There might not be a shop to buy sandwiches close to the venue.

For the Practical Assessment for the Licence application, you must bring:
  • One passport-sized photograph of yourself with your name written (lightly in pencil) on the reverse.
  • Means of paying the sum of £60 to RYA or a Bank Debit or Credit Card you wish to charge. In the case of a card payment, you would write your card detail on the back of the application form that we will post to you with the course book.
